Description
One of my many artistic endeavours draws me to collect old post cards. I use them to create multi-layered images that combine my modern original photography with vintage text and images from days gone by. This artwork is composed of a collectors post card of Toronto City Hall from 1909, superimposed with the modern day Toronto City Hall of 2019. Look carefully and you can see the old building in the background. The original building still stands in downtown Toronto, but it is now called 'Old City Hall' and is used for court cases and law offices held by court officials. The newer one is where civic business takes place in chambers, you can get your marriage license, you can be sworn in as a New Canadian, and city counsellors work.

Terrific picture. Colours are unique showing the differences in time. I remember well the tear down and building of the “new” City Hall. It was a short cut from University Avenue to Simpsons for lunch. My how time has changed the old structures..some historical in nature.

I am so drawn to your work with old postcards, Nina. I have scores of old postcards from a collection that belonged to my wife's grandmother. I have never tried to photograph any of them. I have thought about having some of them scanned but not sure how I would use them. This is truly a beautiful piece of art and a great use of these old gems. L/F

Thank you, Scott. I’d love to see those postcards. It’s the side with the correspondences that intrigues me.
