Description
The Distillery District in Toronto, Canada is a national Historic Site with an incredibly rich history. The site was once The Gooderham and Worts Distillery, and represents the largest and best preserved collection of Victorian Industrial Architecture in North America. The company was founded by James Worts and his brother-in-law William Gooderham in 1931. By 1837 the company's main focus was brewing and distilling. In its time, The Gooderham and Worts Distillery played an important role in the growth and wealth of both the city and nation. In addition to various involvements in real estate and banking, the company at one time contributed more to Federal coffers than any other enterprise in the country.
A bit of extra history: The business prospered, processing grain from Ontario farmers and then shipping it out via the port of Toronto. In 1834, Worts' wife, Elizabeth, died during childbirth. Two weeks later, Worts killed himself by throwing himself into the windmill's well and drowning.
