Description
Thank you to the lover of fine art from Thornhill, Ontario, Canada, who purchased this image of the famous Sam the Record Man sign, now no longer holding its place at Dundas and Yonge, as it did for so much of my life.
Sam the Record Man got its start in 1937 as part of a Radio Sales and Service retailer. In the 1950's the famous store opened on Yonge Street, and proceeded to supply hit music of the day to locals and tourists up until June, 2007. It was, for the longest time, Canada's largest record retailer.
If you were a teenager between 1940 and 1980, 'Sam's' was THE place to get the best deals on the latest album, '45' or later CD of your favourite band.
As a Toronto child of the 1960's this place holds a cherished memory in my heart and the hearts of so many other native Torontonians. I was lucky enough to get images of this sign before it was torn down for new development related to Ryerson University.
