Description
What do you think of when you look at a poppy? I love this flower. It is so distinctive, and of course reminds me of the Wizard of Oz every time I see one, even if it is not red. They also make me think of the famous Canadian poem entitled 'In Flanders Fields', written by John McCrae during World War 1.
One species of poppies produces the narcotic drug, opium. Some species are monocarpic, dying very soon after flowering. Perhaps I also like this flower because of how delicate and ethereal it is, having such a short life, blooming in the late spring or early summer. They are also a good source of pollen for bees.
