Description
Gladys Marie Smith, known professionally as Mary Pickford, was a Canadian-American film actress and producer with a career that spanned five decades. She was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This statue stands on University Ave. in Toronto's downtown on the site where she was born.
Born: April 8, 1892. Died: May 29, 1979.
When Gladys was four years old, her household was under infectious quarantine as a public health measure. (Yes, people did that then also)
Mary PIckford co-founded Pickford–Fairbanks Studios and United Artists, and was one of the 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
She was one of the earliest stars to be billed under her own name, and was one of the most popular actresses of the 1910's and 1920's. Throughout the 1910s and 1920s, Pickford was believed to be the most famous woman in the world, or, as a silent-film journalist described her, "the best known woman who has ever lived, the woman who was known to more people and loved by more people than any other
Mary Pickford was awarded the second Academy Award for Best Actress for her first sound film role in Coquette (1929), and she also received an Academy Honorary Award in 1976 in consideration of her contributions to American cinema.
Nicknames: 'America's Sweetheart', 'The Girl With The Curls', and 'Queen of The Movies'.
Husbands Owen Moore, Douglas Fairbanks, and Charles (Buddy) Rogers
