Chinese Lantern Plants seen against a brick wall in late September. The bright orange and dark purple/black outline of the brick are perfect for the Halloween spirit in you. Makes a great fall greeting card.
Chinese Lantern Plants (Physalis alkekengi) bear white flowers, but the flowers are rather uninteresting and not usually the reason for which the plants are grown. Rather, the plants are grown for these 2-inch wide papery pods or "calyxes" (calyces), that eventually envelop the flowers.
They are a common site in Fall arrangements and a wonderful prelude to Halloween.
