Description
Grab The Brass Ring began as a photograph of a common metal ring hanging in a children's playground. But after some photo editing and digital applications it is now an image that evokes hope, ambition, and opportunity. The metaphor of grabbing the brass ring is referred to in the novel "Catcher in The Rye". On old merry go rounds there was a game you could play while moving up and down on your horse as the carousel spun. Occasionally, your horse would be high enough for you to reach up and catch the brass ring that often seemed elusive. Often opportunities for our future seem just as elusive. The protagonist in the novel has a sister named Phoebe. When Phoebe is riding the carousel and she reaches for the ring, it represents maturing; Phoebe is a symbol for youth and innocence, when she reaches for the ring she is reaching for maturity. Ironically, one message of the novel is that often what we reach for is really a disappointment once we get it.
