Description
A vintage photo paint of the Empire Sandy, anchored in Toronto harbour. Today, this traditional tall ship takes tourists and locals out on to Lake Ontario to experience the nautical flavour of days gone by.
At 200 feet overall and 11,000 square feet of sail, the Empire Sandy has provided majestic cruises of the Toronto Harbour and Lake Ontario for over 25 years. It offers passengers the unique experience of sailing aboard an authentic Tall Ship while enjoying a dinner cruise or other event.
Sails are hoisted as the ship departs and the wind is harnessed to propel the 740 ton Empire Sandy along Toronto's scenic waterfront. Wide expansive decks and spacious wood paneled lounges set the tone for a unique experience out on the water.
Here's a bit of history about the tall ship:
The Empire Sandy was laid down in the shipyard of Clelands (Successors), Willington Quay-on-Tyne England on Dec 22, 1942. She was built as an Englishman/Larch class Deep Sea Tug with the added provision for mounting two Hotchkiss Anti-Aircraft guns. She was completed and went into service on July 14, 1943. Her first voyage commenced July30th sailing in convoy to Iceland. Voyages were usually done in convoys for protection against the German U-Boats. The Empire Sandy sailed in a total of sixteen convoys to her destinations, the exception being the voyage to Sierra Leone in Dec 1944 where she traveled 'Independently'.
She served in the North Atlantic from Iceland to Sierra Leone, the Mediterranean Sea, Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean.
