A jug of Chinese Lantern Plants (Physalis alkekengi) is captured in front of a fireplace wall in late September.
Chinese lantern plants bear white flowers, but the flowers are rather uninteresting and not usually the reason for which the plants are grown. Rather, the plants are grown for these 2-inch wide papery pods or "calyxes" (calyces), that eventually envelop the flowers.
They are a common site in Fall arrangements and a wonderful prelude to Halloween.
